Great Backyard Bird Count 2012 Family Day The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s fun and easy—and it helps the birds.

Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre Family day 2012The Wye Marsh in Midland will be asking families to help count birds while visiting the wildlife centre this Family Day weekend. Families wishing to participate will be given a tally sheet and are asked to count 4 types of birds commonly found at the marsh, blue jays, gold finches, chickadees and cardinals. Stay overnight..Book Midland Hotels

More Family Day Activities

The Wye Marsh will also have plenty of events to celebrate Family Day weekend and on February 20th will have bannock roasting, birdhouse craft, snowman dress-up, snowball target throwing, winter bingo, a scavenger hunt and other fun family activities.

Both organizations are excited to participate in this continent wide tally of the bird population. It is a great opportunity for your children to learn not only about the local bird population but learn about the bigger picture of birds and their habitats. Results will be posted on the GBBC website so it is something your children can follow up on see results. 411ontariokids.com will also post results of the count so make sure to check back after Family Day!

Canada Celebrates 100 years of Stephen Leacock in Mariposa

Stephen Leakock via Wikipedia
This weekend Orillia just north of Barrie  is hosting the annual Orillia Winter Carnival. It is fitting that the charm of a smaller Ontario town is featured in today's Globe and Mail,  Leacock's Leagacy: Yes it includes Bubbles. The story references  the CBC new Sunshine sketches of a Little Town, airing Sunday Night at 8:00 p.m.

The characters living in smaller towns in Canada are discussed by Gayle MacDonald. The story captures the flavours of Canadian small towns with references to several more recent comedy shows, such as Bob & Doug, Corner Gas, and the infamous Trailer Park Boys.  Find out more on Mariposa Ontario  Orillia Ontario Resort getaway Destination Orillia Hotels Inns North of Toronto:

Lake SimcoeLake Simcoe (http://www.400eleven.com/lakesimcoe.html)
Lake Simcoe is Toronto's close to home resort destination. It is the first major lake north of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and has often been described as the "Sixth Great Lake". Lake Simcoe is linked to the Great Lakes through the Trent-Severn Historic Waterway to Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. The two largest cities on Lake Simcoe are
Barrie, and Orillia both with substantial public marinas, beaches and waterfront parks. Simcoe County, York Region, Durham, and Kawartha Lakes all touch on Lake Simcoe. Many say Lake Simoce is the Ice Fishing Capital of North America. See Lake Simcoe Ontario
