Where is cottage country?

Docks along Lake Simcoe near Barrie
Barrie Ontario is often consider the beginning of cottage country. However for those unfamiliar with the destination, hearing about Ontario cottage-country has been a challenge defining where “cottage nirvana” is located as much as “what it consists of”.

A serious assessment of the problem is discussed in great detail in a story in The Globe and Mail by Charles Leech “I'm an immigrant who's never been invited to the cottage”.  Mr. Leech’s belief that cottage-goers belong to an elite group is far removed from reality.  It is all about “cottage country”, not the cottage property.  The amenities, the furnishings or lack there-of are all very subjective.

Essence of Cottage Country in the Spring

Robin Tapley explores spring trails in cottage country
Robin Tapley, a life-long cottage country resident who has been involved with campers, cottagers and tourists throughout his career in the tourism industry says, “It is all about nature.  Visitors from the city want a landscape that captures the imagination and the strength of the Canadian spirit.  Cottage country offers a natural paradise”.  Tapley continues to share his cottage country experiences with  Tapley Nature Trails operating from Dwight Ontario in Muskoka.

Cottage Country Evolution

A cottage country dream by a lake with a vista
Unless one is fortunate to inherit a cottage, most Ontario residents can only dream of the perfect cottage country location.  As economic fortune increases, one progresses through an evolutionary stage from tent camping to renting a camping platform.  More comfort requirements involve a move to a cabin rental.  With additional children a cottage resort stay is preferential. Eventually a seasonal cottage purchase is possible with the future dream of the transformation into a second-home or full time cottage-home.

Cottage Comfort Zone

Ontario Highlands is a part of Cottage Country

Inspiration comes from the cottage country destination and the notion of leaving the rush of the city behind. Many cottage-goers are cottage-country visitors who dream of being owners.

Others just want a basic rustic cabin for a city escape where they forgo the amenities for an intimate encounter with the natural flora and fauna.  Getting to know the many destinations available in cottage-country can be education learning about Ontario’s lakes and parks, wildlife along with the geography and history of the one of Canada’s most geographically diverse provinces.
